What does e-mobility mean for the grid and for electrical energy storage systems?

As the charging infrastructure for e-mobility continues to expand, Commercial and Industrial systems are gaining in importance.

Every new charging park increases the electricity demand within the power grid. To handle this peak load, each expansion stage could be paired with a corresponding grid extension — meaning significant investment in cables, transformers, and construction work.

Alternatively, the supply line to the parking area can be kept at a reasonable size, with the load peaks buffered by a system. Industrial storage systems with high discharge power and a high C-rate are often the more cost-effective solution while requiring relatively little floor space.

The key here is to combine storage and charging point management within a single energy management system in order to create a holistically optimized solution.

Is a step-by-step setup of a charging park possible?

Yes, a step-by-step setup is possible with a FENECON energy storage system. In most cases, only a few charging points are installed in the first step, but further expansion stages with additional AC chargers — and typically mid-speed DC chargers as well — are expected to follow every few years.

Does the FEMS app automatically detect whether the car is being charged single-phase or three-phase?

Yes, the minimum value (single-phase 1.38 kW, three-phase 4.2 kW) and the maximum value of the charging power (single-phase 7.4 kW, three-phase 22.1 kW) change accordingly.

When phase 2 and phase 3 are switched on or off, the values above change accordingly.

What do I need for multiple wallboxes or an entire charging park?

If you have multiple wallboxes or an entire charging park, you will need the FEMS App Multi-Charging Point Management. Since 01. April 2023, this app has been included starting with the second charging station or the second charging point. No additional app purchase is required!

Please observe the connection regulations! Commissioning may only be carried out by a qualified electrical installer with the required experience and training.

How do I find the right wallbox for my electric car?

It depends on several parameters:

  • desired charging power: (AC wallbox or DC fast-charging station)
    Important: For charging stations up to 11 kW, the connection conditions must be requested and the grid operator must be notified.
    For 22 kW wallboxes, additional approval from the grid operator is required according to the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur). In this case, a three-phase connection is usually required.

  • number of charging points for electric cars to be charged simultaneously. A distinction is made here between single or multi-connector types.

  • connector types, i.e. the connectors of the electric cars (usually Type 2 or CCS in Europe).

  • cable or socket variant (should the cable for the electric car be brought along, or already attached to the wallbox?)

What do I need to connect charging infrastructure to my FENECON energy storage system?

The wallbox must be compatible with the FENECON energy storage system. In addition, the charging station or wallbox must feature a network interface (Ethernet/Wi-Fi) so it can be integrated into the customer network. The FEMS can then communicate with the charging station via this network.

I want to replace my charging station — do I need to buy a new license key?

Provided your new charging station is supported by the FEMS, the license key you already purchased can be re-assigned to a new charging station of the respective category (AC or DC charging station).

This is done via the App Center.
